For many years it was the belief that it was cheaper to rehabilitate someone after they had declined fully from being independent. This belief has now been changed that it is cheaper to maintain someone’s function by checking in periodically to see how this person is doing and keep them from slipping away functionally.
Medicare will pay for such programs as long as these individuals have a medical necessity to keep them from deteriorating and decline functionally. A maintenance program is designed to keep patients functions at a high level and not let them slip downward.
Medicare must approve of this program for each person and it is carefully monitored and scrutinized. The therapist must periodically update the functional level of each person to medicare and a review is done to continue these treatments.
Mr. David Wetzel, PT, with In-Home Physical Therapy, provides maintenance therapy for Medicare patients in the comfort of their own home.
