Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitatation (PNF) is an unusual type of muscular strengthening. It is used primarily for individuals with physical impairments due to weakness from strokes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and weakness from neurological disabilities.
The theory behind this incredible modality is that all movements we do have patterns stored in the brain. Moving an arm or leg for example passively will re-awaken the brain due to its memory of this pattern and facilitate a physical contraction reflex in response. These patterns will facilitate a neurological impulse or contraction and movement.
This modality has been used for over 40 years with surprising results. It is used in most hospitals and rehabilitation centers all over the world helping to restore functional activity again.
Mr. David Wetzel, PT, with In-Home Physical Therapy has used PNF therapy for over 35 years in shoulder, knee and hip rehabilitation.
